What Man Utd board thought about Sanchez and his struggles at club
Man Utd's next six Premier League fixtures
Alexis Sanchez recently opened up on his time at Manchester United and confessed he had previously been hoping to join Manchester City instead. The Chile international left Arsenal for Old Trafford back in the January transfer window of 2018. And he failed to live up to expectations, scoring just five goals before leaving for Inter Milan the following year.
Speaking recently, Sanchez opened up on his time at United by saying: “I was about to go to City. I spoke to Guardiola every day, he told me happy birthday.
“He was like my dad. He was my dad at Barcelona and he was like my dad at City.
“We talked, we talked every day, he sent me messages.
“And everything was ready, there was a player who was going to go to Arsenal.
“Then [Arsene] Wenger tells me you are not leaving because the other player did not want to come and they do not have another.
Man Utd takeover: Man Utd making plans for five players
“Suddenly the cell phone rings. Mourinho tells me: ‘Alexis, here is the seven [shirt] available for you.’”
In the end, United failed to see the best from Sanchez. A player who had been expected to become a legend soon instead regressed into being a major flop.
And it was reported in 2019 that the Red Devils felt the Chile international flopped because the size of the club was simply too big for him.
Sanchez had previously been unstoppable at Arsenal, establishing himself as one of the best attackers in the Premier League.
He’d also done well at Udinese and Barcelona, too.

Sanchez would score just five goals for United across all competitions, toiling under bosses such as Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And he left for Inter in the summer of 2019, with Solskjaer deeming the forward surplus to requirements.
Sanchez is still going strong at Marseille and insists he has no regrets about moving to Old Trafford, even if he failed to show his best form.
The 34-year-old said: “It wasn’t a money thing, so everyone knows. It was the same with United and City.
“And he said to me here is the seven, we are playing in the Champions League and we are going to give everything.

“I wanted to leave at that moment, but I had Guardiola’s word.
“That’s when I said to myself, Chilean footballer playing for Manchester United, something that has never happened.
“With the seven of [Eric] Cantona, [David] Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and now a Chilean had it, it was a dream.”
He continued: “I don’t regret going to United. Things happen for a reason.
“I would have liked to have gone to City, yes.
“We would have won the Champions League by now. In the final, I would have done something.”
The No 7 shirt is now free again at United.
Cristiano Ronaldo was the last occupant, sporting it for 18 months before leaving for Al-Nassr back in November.
