'What is he doing?!' Gary Neville slams Man Utd star during Aston Villa win
Gary Neville slammed Aaron Wan-Bissaka for his role in Aston Villa’s goal during Manchester United’s Premier League victory at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side secured a 2-1 victory over Villa on Friday night to move joint-top of the Premier League.
Anthony Martial headed home Wan-Bissaka’s cross to give Manchester United the lead shortly before half-time.
But Villa levelled after the break when Bertrand Traore converted Jack Grealish’s cross, and Neville was critical of Wan-Bissaka’s role in the goal.
Manchester United conceded a free-kick on the left-hand side but Wan-Bissaka spent several seconds attempting to block the pass rather than drop back and pick up Grealish.
While the goal did not deter United, who regained their lead minutes later through a Bruno Fernandes penalty, Neville slammed Wan-Bissaka’s ‘naive’ defending.
‘That’s been coming,’ Neville said while commentating on the game for Sky Sports.
‘It’s so naive on that far side from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, what is he doing? Villa were knocking on the door and they’ve bashed it down eventually.
‘Watch him [Wan-Bissaka], he blocks it initially. He turns his back and doesn’t sprint back. He tries to block it again, it’s madness.
‘Once you leave Grealish in that position, the quality is fantastic. Traore makes it look simple in the end. That’s perfect from him and it leaves Maguire and De Gea no chance.
‘You do one thing or the other. You either get the booking and stop it or you get back and mark Jack Grealish. It’s poor [from Wan-Bissaka].’
Wan-Bissaka was asked about his role in Aston Villa’s goal after the 2-1 win and said: ‘They played a quick [free-kick] and it’s unfortunate, but as you can see, we hit back.’
The English right-back added: ‘[The win] means a lot, it shows where we’ve come from, from the start of the season.
‘We’re just taking it game by game. It was a late start for us, we were in catch-up [mode], but we’re here now. No excuses.’
