Jorge Mendes attempted to push Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Manchester City closer in a meeting with Juventus on Thursday. Ronaldo’s agent, Mendes, is the driving force behind the 36-year-old’s potential Premier League return this month.

Rumours of the Juventus forward’s desire to leave Turin have ramped up over the past week, and a return to England is now looking on the cards.

Man City’s pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane ended on Wednesday, as he confirmed he would be staying in north London for the season ahead.

The Premier League champions have reportedly reacted by moving quickly to sign Ronaldo in what would be a controversial transfer.

There are hurdles still to clear in negotiations, though, which Mendes tried to resolve on Thursday.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Juventus are demanding £21.4million (€25m) for Ronaldo this summer.

And Mendes is attempting to chop that down to a cut-price fee or even a free transfer so City can complete a deal.

He wants to take Ronaldo back to Manchester, but to the Etihad Stadium, which represents the only realistic destination remaining.

The former Manchester United star desires a new experience and will likely join Pep Guardiola’s squad if his agent gets his own way.

Di Marzio adds that Man City are willing to offer Ronaldo a two-year contract worth £12.9m (€15m) per season.

The contract would expire in 2023, which is when Guardiola has hinted he will leave the club after seven years in charge.

The Independent also report that Ronaldo has already directly spoken to the Catalan boss about a potential switch.

Personal terms have been agreed upon, and all that’s seemingly left to decide is the fee Juventus will receive for his services.

Ronaldo’s former Manchester United teammate Dimitar Berbatov is sceptical over the prospect of a Man City move.

He told Betfair: “Manchester City have been linked with him and, now that they won’t be signing Kane, they are probably looking at other options in attack.

“Ronaldo would be a good fit at Man City but do I see him going there? I doubt it. He is still one of the best in the world, but Pep Guardiola’s philosophy might not suit them signing Ronaldo.

“With his history with United, I don’t see him gaining anything by going to City.”
