What Chelsea can expect from Pochettino as Spurs hero set to take job
Lampard insists Chelsea 'will be back' after Champions League exit
Chelsea could be poised to make a number of important changes to the ways they operate on and off the pitch under Mauricio Pochettino if the Argentine coach is appointed as their new permanent manager later this year. Pochettino has reportedly emerged as one of the overwhelming favourites for the role, with the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique said to no longer be in the running to take over at Stamford Bridge.
Discussions with Pochettino are said to be advancing quickly behind the scenes at Chelsea, with the Blues hoping to make an appointment in the not-too-distant future as they look to get a permanent boss in place before the start of next season. The west Londoners were reportedly hesitant to negotiate with Pochettino at first given his connections to Tottenham but have since been encouraged to chase his signature by the reaction from their players and sections of the club’s fanbase.
He is now ‘close’ to joining Chelsea on a permanent basis, according to The Guardian, with all parties said to be confident that a positive outcome will emerge from the ongoing talks. Confirmation of the move could reportedly arrive ‘soon’ given the fast-flowing nature of the situation and the productive nature of the negotiations up to this point.
Pochettino’s arrival would likely bring about a handful of changes at Chelsea, with the former Tottenham boss able to tweak their playing style in order to implement a high-octane attacking philosophy. He managed to get Spurs playing attractive football on their way to the Champions League final back in 2019 and would certainly be able to get his new fans onside by helping Chelsea to find the back of the net on a consistent basis after struggling to do so this term.

The Argentine boss would also be expected to place a greater emphasis on bringing through the club’s young players than some of his predecessors, given his success in helping the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane to thrive during his time at Tottenham. His arrival at Chelsea would be a good sign for players like Lewis Hall and David Datro Fofana, who would surely be well-placed to make the most of their full potential under Pochettino’s watchful eye.
It remains to be seen whether Pochettino will eventually be snapped up by Chelsea, who are yet to push the move for his signature over the line in spite of the apparent willingness from all parties to wrap up proceedings in the near future. However, it seems as though not everybody is expecting him to be a success in charge of the Blues, with outspoken pundit Simon Jordan questioning Pochettino’s suitability for the role earlier this month.

“I don’t think it’s a marriage made in heaven,” Jordan told talkSPORT. “That being said, I’ve never believed that Pochettino has the winning gene. I think he’s a really good manager, I think he’ll get you to a certain level.
“There’s something about Pochettino that just tells me he doesn’t have this ruthless streak that someone like [Thomas] Tuchel had and someone like obviously the great Alex Ferguson had and [Jose] Mourinho has. This inability to see anything other than just winning at all costs.”
