West Ham chief Karren Brady sends brutal message to Spurs over Harry Kane saga

Harry Kane’s future at Tottenham is set to take centre stage among this summer’s major transfer rumours, with the player reportedly hoping to cut ties after 17 years at the club.

Spurs haven’t won a major trophy since lifting the League Cup in 2008, while Jose Mourinho’s sacking in April has left question marks over the managerial situation in north London.

West Ham vice-chairperson Karren Brady has delivered a damning verdict on the matter and said a player “usually gets his way” once he’s decided to leave.

The Apprentice personality spoke from personal experience in a recent Sun column: “Once a player has announced that he wishes to go, he regards it as having packed his bags with a taxi waiting outside the changing room.

“Usually, he has his way because there is no point in keeping a player who lusts for elsewhere.

“Maybe he will, as they say, fulfil his ambitions, but this doesn’t always work out.”

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was reportedly left ‘furious’ after Kane conducted an interview with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, saying he would decide his own future.

The England captain is contracted at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until the summer of 2024, but Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are understood to be interested in his signature.

Brady specified Dimitri Payet and Marko Arnautovic as two prominent examples of players whose situations became untenable once they decided they were leaving West Ham.

Both Payet (2016) and Arnautovic (2018) were named Hammer of the Year after their debut seasons in east London, but their attentions were turned in light of outside interest.

Brady described Payet’s case as “the most upsetting” after it he sought to rejoin his family in France: “His determination to return to Marseille resurfaced and after he made it clear he wanted to go, we decided with the utmost reluctance to let him.

“He said about his departure from West Ham that ‘It’s what I wanted. It was clear from the start.’

“It’s hard to swallow, especially as he really was that seductive a player, among the best we’ve had in my time.”

Payet eventually got his way and was sold back to Marseille after two years. Arnautovic spent the same amount of time with West Ham before he got his wish and joined Chinese club Shanghai SIPG in July 2019, with the Hammers opting to sell after he created “a bad atmosphere.”

Brady also referenced Robbie Savage’s infamous efforts to engineer a move to Blackburn in January 2005, the ex-midfielder later admitting he downed tools to force his exit from Birmingham.

Kane’s long-term links with boyhood club Tottenham make it unimaginable that he’d employ similar tactics to get his desired move this summer, but Brady forecasts a split could be inevitable.

Spurs sit seventh in the Premier League and must beat Leicester away on Sunday to have a hope of qualifying for the Europa League, with West Ham guaranteed to take sixth provided they get a result at home to Southampton.
