West Brom edge closer to Mbaye Diagne transfer as Galatasaray reignite replacement talks
Transfer update: Latest on Haaland, Messi and Salah
West Brom’s hopes of landing Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne have been boosted after the Turkish club re-entered negotiations with Zamalek over a deal for his potential replacement Mostafa Mohamed. The 23-year-old, who has been capped five times by Egypt, was the subject of an offer earlier this month from Galatasaray consisting of an initial loan with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
The Baggies have already held talks with Galatasaray for the Senegal international as Sam Allardyce looks to bolster his survival bid by adding some extra firepower.
West Brom failed with a swoop for Hoffenheim’s Ishak Belfodil earlier in the window.
Allardyce was also open to reunion with Cenk Tosun, who he signed for £27million from Besiktas while in charge of Everton in 2018.
However, the former England manager has just one Premier League loan slot remaining and the club are still keen on landing Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury on a temporary deal.
Besides the addition of Robert Snodgrass, Allardyce has openly admitted he’s struggled to navigate the post-Brexit market.
But, Express Sport understands that West Brom have now been offered hope they can land Diagne.
That’s because Galatasaray are closing in on the signing of his potential replacement in the form of Egyptian forward Mohamed.
The Zamalek frontman initially snubbed a move to the Turk Telekom Stadium in favour of a move to Saint-Etienne.
But his proposed switch to Ligue 1 has now collapsed after the French club made a mess of negotiations.
Now Mohamed is edging closer to Galatasaray, who would then allow Diagne to complete his move to The Hawthorns, with the two clubs now back in talks.
West Brom are looking at a loan deal for the 29-year-old, who scored his 50th Turkish Super Lig goal in just 62 appearances earlier this month.
The Midlands club, who five points adrift following the 3-2 win at Wolves in the Black Country derby, are also keen to negotiate an option to buy should they secure Premier League survival.
Last weekend, Zamalek chief Ibrahim Abdallah revealed the details of Galatasaray’s offer for their star man Mohamed.
They presented an offer with a loan fee of £1.5million, plus an option to buy for £3.7m which satisfied the demands of Zamalek.
Mohamed’s agent is said to have told the Cairo giants that his client preferred the move to Saint-Etienne before the dramatic turn of events.
Now West Brom will patiently await the outcome of the renewed negotiations but there is now confidence Diagne will be given the green-light to seal his move to the Premier League.
