Wesley Fofana has apologised to Leicester City supporters after being pictured wearing an Arsenal shirt. The image, taken in Dubai, began to circulate on social media and featured Fofana posing for a photo while sporting the Gunners’ home kit from the 2020/21 season.
Leicester fans quickly picked up on this and were unsure as to why the 20-year-old defender had allowed this to be taken.
Arsenal supporters, meanwhile, began to get their hopes up as they considered the possibility of a summer transfer deal for the Frenchman.
But Fofana later addressed the photograph, explaining the context behind the situation on Twitter.
“OK mates. I have been tricked by some former friends wearing an Arsenal jersey,” he shared on social media.

“I played a football game (as coach I cannot run) with some friends and at the end we exchanged jerseys.
“I have been photographed in, what I thought, was my private sphere. I had obviously no thinking that what was a friendly game and joke will end up in social networks.
“I feel sorry for our fans and angry against the guys that have seized the opportunity to make this bad buzz.
“Sorry for all Arsenal friends, I have strictly no problem with the red but only the blue is in my heart.”

Fofana has enjoyed an excellent debut campaign at the King Power Stadium, helping Brendan Rodgers’ side to the FA Cup as well as securing a place in next season’s Europa League.
He was recently named the Foxes’ Young Player of the Season, having made a positive impression based on the 38 appearances he has made this term.
Fofana operated in both a back three and a back four during the 2020/21 season, showcasing his versatility by occasionally stepping in at the right-back position for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Leicester will now be keen to keep hold of the talented youngster, who joined the club last October in a £36.5millon deal from St Etienne.
Contracted until 2025, Fofana would command a significant fee from any clubs eyeing a possible transfer deal.
The Marseille-born defender was supposed to be part of the French side taking part in the Under-21 European Championships, but missed out due to a shoulder injury.
France were knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the competition by the Netherlands’ Under-21s, suffering a 2-1 defeat on Monday.
The final of the European Championships takes place this evening, with Portugal taking on Germany.
