- Ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger slammed United’s weak defence on the flanks
- He was extra critical of Red Devils trio Diogo Dalot, Jadon Sancho and Antony
- Wenger also felt the visitors were too ‘obsessed’ with respecting their gameplan
Arsene Wenger heavily criticised Diogo Dalot, Jadon Sancho and Antony after Manchester United’s hefty 6-3 defeat by rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
The former Arsenal manager was stunned by the Red Devils’ lack of work ethic and discipline on the flanks, as Pep Guardiola’s side continually terrorised the visitors from wide areas throughout the derby.
Manchester United found themselves 4-0 behind at the break after first-half doubles from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, who each completed their hat-tricks in the second-half to cap off a devastating display from the reigning champions.

After the match, Wenger did not hold back in his assessment of Erik ten Hag’s wide players.
‘What is for me unbelievable in the first half is that Man United has defended so badly on the flanks,’ the 72-year-old said via beIN Sports.
‘From the first minute Dalot got a yellow card, and Sancho and Antony did not contribute defensively.
‘They were, in the whole half, flooded on the flanks and they were always in trouble.

‘After that, when they had the ball, I felt they were obsessed by respecting too much the game plan.
‘They wanted always to go too quickly forward and lost so many balls and didn’t have enough possession.
‘They didn’t play for possession, they wanted just to get on the counter-attack.’
Although he rescued a goal back, Wenger lambasted Antony for his poor defensive work-rate
Every defender in Ten Hag’s back line had yet to feature in a Manchester derby ahead of the demolition at the Etihad, and it only took Foden eight minutes to break the deadlock.
Although the Red Devils showed some spirit in the second-half to claw back three goals, thanks to a stunner from Antony and brace from substitute Anthony Martial, the mauling served as a cruel reminder to Ten Hag that Old Trafford’s defensive woes will not change overnight.
Manchester United stay rooted in sixth place while City climbed to within a point of league leaders Arsenal, who triumphed 3-1 in the north London derby on Saturday.
