All Euro 2020 matches taking place at Wembley are set to be given an exemption from lockdown rules by the Government, with 45,000 fans expected to attend knockout-stage fixtures.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has set his sights on bringing the country out of lockdown entirely on June 21, but certain reports suggest 'Freedom Day' could be delayed by two weeks amid concerns over new Covid-19 variants.

Regardless of whether Johnson puts those plans on hold or not, though, The Telegraph are reporting that Euro 2020 matches being held at Wembley will not be subject to the same restrictions at other events.

A capacity of 22,500 spectators at the national stadium will be guaranteed throughout the tournament, while as many as 45,000 could be allowed to attend from the Round of 16 onwards.

All three of England's group-stage fixtures are taking place at Wembley, while the first knockout match being held in London comes on June 26.

The Football Association was required to give UEFA a commitment that at least 22,500 fans will be in attendance at each of the eight games hosted at Wembley.

As a result, Government chiefs will ensure matches held at the 90,000-capacity stadium do not fall under the same jurisdictions as other events across the country.

Only sporting events that have been part of the government's Events Research Programme have been allowed to welcome back more than 10,000 supporters, with sporting officials desperate to increase capacities above that limit.

Organisers at Wimbledon, which is only a few weeks away, are hoping to allow more than the 25 per cent capacity limit for this summer's tennis showpiece.

While Euro 2020 matches have a guaranteed capacity of 22,500, England fans attending the fixtures will still have to produce a negative coronavirus test to enter.

England get their first outing at the major tournament underway this Sunday against Croatia, before they take on Scotland next Friday and Czech Republic the following Tuesday.
