'We all know' – Aubameyang names Arsenal's MOTM vs Benfica

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang may have scored twice in a 3-2 win against Benfica but he felt Bukayo Saka was the standout candidate for man of the match.

Aubameyang’s late winner – assisted by Saka – saw Mikel Arteta’s side progress to the last-16 of the Europa League.

It was far from a straightforward win. Although Aubameyang put the Gunners in front – thanks to another Saka assist – they were pegged back by goals from Diogo Goncalves and Rafa Silva.

But Kierney Tierney’s equaliser gave Arsenal hope and Aubameyang’s 87th minute goal sent them through with a 4-3 win on aggregate.

After the match, Arsenal Fan TV hosted a poll for their side’s man of the match, using Saka for all four options.

They apologised to Aubameyang, who scored twice, for not making him one of the options.

That prompted a response from the Gabon international, who clearly agreed with their assessment, writing: ‘No sorry needed. We all know.’

Captain Aubameyang was delighted with the ‘character’ shown by his team-mates as they kept their hopes of silverware alive.

‘Everyone is happy tonight,’ he told BT Sport. ‘This is what gives me power every day, take errors from the past and transform to strength.

‘The team showed a lot of character and we deserved the win. It was a hard game. What we showed tonight will be an example for the future.’
