‘Wayne Rooney will manage Man Utd one day – he’s preparing for phone to ring’
Dimitar Berbatov is convinced Wayne Rooney will manage Manchester United one day.
The silky Bulgarian, who shared a dressing room with Wazza for four seasons, says the England legend has the Old Trafford hotseat in his sights and reckons he's already preparing for the day his former club comes calling. Rooney was unveiled as new Birmingham City boss last week following reasonable, if not a little underwhelming, stints at DC United and Derby County and will take charge of his first Blues game against Middlesbrough on Saturday.
Speaking to Betfair, Berbatov says he expects Rooney to keep climbing the ladder until he reaches the top. "I'm pretty sure he's preparing for the top job – to manage United – because that's the ultimate goal," the former Tottenham striker said.

"When you have someone like Wayne, you can't think he'll stay at a smaller club all his life and manage them. He's building step by step and I respect that," he added.
"He's climbing the managerial ladder right now I'm sure at one stage he will go for the Man United job. I think he's preparing for the day his phone rings and he's told that Man United are waiting for him."

Rooney's move to Birmingham represents arguably the biggest challenge of his budding managerial career. His stint at Derby was dogged by financial troubles while expectations weren't particularly high for him in Washington D.C. either. Birmingham, meanwhile, have been narrowly avoiding the drop for seven straight years, but a change in ownership and the shock arrival of NFL legend Tom Brady earlier in the year has sent fan optimism into overdrive.
