Wayne Rooney tells Marcus Rashford how to get to Mbappe and Haaland level

Wayne Rooney has given his verdict on Manchester United's recent business, expressing his excitement over the return of Jonny Evans and Marcus Rashford's new long-term deal.

United made two significant announcements on Tuesday – first, they confirmed the signing of Evans on a short-term deal. The 35-year-old defender, who started his career at United, rejoins the club after eight years having impressed manager Erik ten Hag during training.

Evans had previously left the club under Louis van Gaal's tenure and went on to play for West Brom and Leicester. His short-term contract will allow him to participate in pre-season games for the club.

Secondly, Rashford's new deal was another positive development for United. The 25-year-old forward had an outstanding season, scoring 30 goals in all competitions.

He has now committed his future to the club until 2028, signing a contract worth £325,000 per week. On Rashford's new deal, former Old Trafford striker Rooney said (via the Mirror ): "I think Marcus Rashford is an incredible talent. I’m delighted he’s signed a new deal."

Rooney said that Rashford must now fire United to more trophies to move forward in his career and join the elite group of forwards.

"I think the next five years are going to be important in his legacy," Rooney added. "He can score a lot of goals but if he really wants to go to that level of which [Kylian] Mbappe and [Erling] Haaland are at he really needs to be the man to get Manchester United back to winning titles and I hope he can."

On Evans' return, Rooney said: "I've literally just seen it. Dripped through before coming in. Yeah, I think Jonny is a fantastic player.

"Obviously he's had his injuries over the last couple of years but I haven't seen any details of it. I'm assuming he's signed as cover and [in case] there are any injuries to the centre-backs that are starting."
