Wayne Rooney sidelines Derby County star for two months with training tackle

Wayne Rooney’s difficult time at Derby County is not getting any easier after he injured one of his own players in training, putting Jason Knight out for at least two months.

The Telegraph report that Rooney and Knight went into a 50-50 challenge in training and the current player came off worse, potentially missing up to 12 weeks of action with a serious ankle injury.

This is the last thing the Rams need with the woeful financial state of the club meaning they only have nine registered senior players.

Republic of Ireland international Knight was one of them, having captained the side under Rooney earlier this year, but he will now miss the start of the Championship season.

Clearly an accident from the Derby boss, but Rooney will certainly be rueing going in for the tackle with the 20-year-old, who has already made 80 appearances for the Rams in his short career so far.

Rooney commented on Knight’s injury on Saturday after Derby lost to Salford in a friendly, but didn’t mention how it had come about.

‘Jason will be out for eight to 12 weeks,’ said the former Manchester United star. ‘He has rocked his ankle, thankfully, he doesn’t need surgery but needs the time to make sure he gets his ankle strong again.

‘Of course (it is a huge blow), everyone knows what Knighty brings to us, he is a fantastic player, great energy, and he will be a loss, but we have to deal with that.’

Derby are still under a transfer embargo although discussions are underway with the EFL that would at least allow them to sign free agents on 12-month contracts or bring in players on six-month loans.

The Rams are hoping that will be agreed this week, with the Championship season just two weeks away.

Rooney is having a tough time away from football after he got the police involved over photos emerged on social media showing him with women in a nightclub and hotel room.
