Wayne Rooney "furious" with Jamie Vardy for dismissing Euro 2016 chat claim
Wayne Rooney is reportedly furious with Jamie Vardy after the Leicester City star accused him of "talking nonsense" when giving evidence for the Wagatha Christie trial.
The Derby County manager told the court on Tuesday (May 17th) that he was asked by ex-England manager Roy Hodgson to have a private chat with Vardy before the Three Lions headed to France for the 2016 European Championships. From the witness box, Rooney recalled his "awkward" encounter with Vardy by suggesting wife Rebekah "calm down" on social media.
Though Vardy has since denied a conversation between himself and Rooney took place. "Wayne is talking nonsense," said Vardy from the high court steps.
"He must be confused because he never spoke to me about issues concerning Becky’s media work at Euro 2016. There was nothing to speak about, I know this because I discuss everything with Becky.”
Rooney is reported to be furious with Vardy's dismissal of the conversation – especially as the statement was released to the public outside of court and not under oath. A source told the Daily Mail: "Jamie must have been aware of what Wayne was going to say weeks ago when his wife received all witness statements from Coleen’s side.
"If he really believed what Wayne swore was not true, he should have had the guts to stand up in court and say so on oath as Wayne did. Instead, he and Becky left court early and he chose to make his statement outside where he couldn’t be held to account for it."
The release is said to have caused a stir from inside the Royal Courts of Justice, where the session was still sitting. And Judge, Mrs Justice Steyn, could still yet express a view on the statement when the hearing resumes on Thursday (May 19th) for the closing speeches.
