Wayne Rooney finally reacts to iconic ‘fashion nightmare’ pic of Man Utd players

Wayne Rooneyhas admitted that he and hisManchester Unitedteam-mates “look terrible” in the iconic photo of them from the noughties.

Rooney and his mates were likely unaware that an unremarkable snap of them walking down the street in Manchester would go on to become a viral classic on social media.

You know the one. There’s Rooney, John O’Shea and Paul Scholes in the foreground, then Rio Ferdinand, Alan Smith and Ruud van Nistelrooy behind them.

The photo is from 2005 when the players were going to a dinner at Stock's Restaurant in Manchester.

It has morphed into something completely different due to the clothing the United players are wearing.

Baggy jeans and jackets are the garment of choice, with Rooney also choosing to match his blue jeans with smart black shoes, while the others are mainly in trainers.

To be fair to him, Rooney has previously invited jokes in 2018 by posting the picture on Twitter as a throwback.

But now, for the first time, he has offered a deeper piece of analysis on his fashion choices.

“I think I’m looking well, mate,”he told SPORTbible when shown the picture.

“Mate, there’s a few worse than me. Look at John O’Shea!

“That was the style back then. That’s the style back then, wasn’t it? But we all look terrible, mate.”

For once, fans online are in broad agreement with Rooney’s judgement, with commenters united in condemning the ‘fashion nightmare’.

“When’s the album out?” wrote one, while others compared the United players to Boyzone.

“Got to love the noughties,” added another.

“Buzzing for a group of lads to recreate this on Halloween,” said another.

The quizzing over his fashion choices from 17 years ago are likely to be among the easier questions Rooney deals with this week ahead of the release of a documentary about his career.

‘Rooney’ is released by Amazon Prime on Friday and explores his career on and off pitch – from his Everton debut, through his years at Manchester United and his international exploits with England to the present day, as manager of Derby County.

It has alreadydredged up some controversy, with Rooney’s admission about wearing longer studs in a match against Chelsea in 2006prompting the FA to get in touchwith him.
