Wayne Rooney could ditch DC United and return to England amid Championship inter
Birmingham City have set their sights on making Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney their new head coach if current boss John Eustace seeks a move away. The team, which NFL icon Tom Brady has invested in, believes the D.C. United head coach would be an ideal replacement if Eustace were to move on.
Rooney has enjoyed a mixed spell after turning his attention to coaching following an illustrious career. The 37-year-old began his journey as a player-coach with Derby County where he oversaw the team during an administration and was relegated to League One.
The former striker then sought a move to manage in MLS with D.C. United, a club he played with for a single season in the twilight of his career. Now Rooney has been linked with a surprising return to English football with speculation mounting that Birmingham City manager John Eustace could be poached.
Rangers manager Michael Beale has seen his position come under threat after suffering a humiliating Champions League exit and defeat to rivals Celtic – making Eustace an ideal replacement.
Eustace has enjoyed great success over his time at the club which saw the Blues avoid relegation in his first season on a small budget. The club has since gone on to sign 13 players this summer and remain unbeaten in the Championship so far.
Eustace had been offered the opportunity to move this summer with Swansea City approaching the former midfielder but rejected the offer much to fan’s delight. However, his success so far this season has made him a suitable candidate, leading to Rooney’s name being linked as his replacement.
Rooney has never shied away from seeking a return to English football and has always maintained that his time in MLS is to gain experience.

The move would be the next exciting step for Birmingham City after seven-time Super Bowl winner and NFL legend Tom Brady became a minority owner of the team. Brady’s role will see him become the chairman of a new advisory board at St Andrew’s.
The deal, which follows his retirement from the NFL in February, is a move that Brady called a “real honour” following the announcement. “Birmingham City is an iconic club with so much history and passion, and to be part of the Blues is a real honour for me,” Brady said.
“BCFC is built on teamwork and determination and I’m excited to work alongside the board, management and players to make our Second City club second to none. I’ve been part of some amazing teams in my day, and I’m looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham.”
Birmingham is next in action on Saturday when they play Watford in the Championship. D.C. faces San Jose in MLS next as they look to secure a place in the final series play-offs.
