England and Manchester United legend has had his say on who he believes will make the Premier League top four at the end of the season.
Although the title looks set to go to one of Arsenal or Manchester City, there are still a number of sides still battling for the final two spots in the race for Champions League football next term.
Newcastle, Tottenham and Manchester United are all tied on 50 points, while Brighton have three games in hand on Spurs with 43 points – with Liverpool also still in with a shout despite being eight points adrift of fifth.
And Rooney believes that Jurgen Klopp’s side will join his former club United in the final two places of the top four come the end of the season.
The 37-year-old labelled Arsenal as the ‘favourites’ to lift the title, as well as claiming that Mikel Arteta’s side had dealt with the pressure and expectation without slipping so far.
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has offered his predictions ahead of the Premier League run in
The 37-year-old claimed that Arsenal are still favourites to lift a first title in 19 years in May
‘The title race? Nothing would surprise me from Manchester City,’ he told The Times. ‘They could put together an incredible run and still win it but you have to say Arsenal are favourites.
‘Everyone has been waiting for them to drop off but they’ve been top of the league for so many weeks and dealing with the pressure all season. I don’t see a collapse from them.’
Arsenal regained their eight point lead over title rivals City after a confident 4-1 win over Leeds on Saturday, with Gabriel Jesus scoring on his first league start since November for the Gunners.
City had cut the gap to five after an even more impressive display in dismantling Liverpool by the same score line earlier in the day, with Jack Grealish starring for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Arsenal’s lead comes by virtue of having played a game more than City, with the two set to meet in a clash that will surely prove decisive in the title race on April 26.
But it is the other two spots in the top four that remain far from certain, although the DC United boss seemed confident that Liverpool could put a run of results together to ensure they would still be in Europe’s top club competition.
Manchester City are currently eight points behind the leaders but have crucially played one game fewer
Rooney predicted his former side United and their rivals Liverpool will complete the top-four
‘The top four? A few weeks ago, there looked a possibility Manchester United could challenge for the Premier League title.
‘Erik ten Hag’s team fell short, but they could still end up with three trophies, and I’m sure will finish in the top four, then kick on after he buys a few players to strengthen in the summer.
‘So Manchester United will be there but I have a suspicion that Liverpool might sneak into it, thanks to the quality of their squad and their experience.
‘They’re capable of going on a run. I see Newcastle, despite the great job Eddie has done, falling just a little short.’
