Former Manchester United star Ji-sung Park has backed Wayne Rooney to one day take on the managerial role at Old Trafford, and there could be a vacancy available as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to be sacked.

The announcement of Solskjaer's departure is expected imminently after United were humiliated by Watford in a 4-1 defeat, with an emergency board meeting scheduled following the full-time whistle.

Talks reportedly took place for hours, but a decision has been made and Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick may take over as interim bosses until United make the right appointment.

However, Park believes that they could soon move for another former United star.

Despite opting for a former player when appointing Solskjaer which ultimately proved unsuccessful, Park believes that Rooney should one day be given the chance in the United dugout.

Park told Goal: "I believe Wayne can make it. He had great experiences from his very young age and he also had many difficult moments in his career that he overcame eventually.

"For sure, he has great leadership skills as well. So, I believe he can be United's manager in the future."

Rooney has only just begun his coaching career since retiring, but is facing an extremely tough start to life as manager at Derby County who are riddled with off the field issues.

Rooney faces almost guaranteed relegation with Derby this season after being handed a 21-point penalty for financial breaches, and they are unsurprisingly rooted to the bottom of the Championship on minus three points.

It'll be an almighty turnaround if Rooney can pull it off, but Park has already mentioned that Rooney have overcome a lot in this career, and if United don't move for their former star now, he could still prove his worth for the future.
