Warnock claims Lampard is 'making a MISTAKE' with public criticism

Neil Warnock claims Frank Lampard is ‘making a MISTAKE’ in publicly scalding his players amid a fierce relegation scrap… and urges Everton boss to focus on telling out-of-form stars ‘how good they are’

  • Frank Lampard has not minced his words when it comes to his Everton players
  • Neil Warnock told the Gary Newbon Sports Show with Jewson that Lampard is ‘making a mistake’ taking that approach when Everton are in a relegation fight
  • Publicly criticising players is the wrong approach, in the opinion of Warnock
  • The veteran coach wants Lampard to tell players ‘how good they are’ instead

Neil Warnock wants Frank Lampard to keep frustrations with Everton’s players in house because it is ‘a mistake’ to publicly shame players amid a relegation fight.

Following a 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace, Lampard ripped into his players, questioning their commitment to the fight he found the squad in.

‘There is only so much you can keep trying to butter someone up to get confidence,’ Lampard said.

Neil Warnock has looked to provide some managerial advice to Frank Lampard at Everton

Everton beat Manchester United but in the weeks prior Lampard publicly called out his players

‘You’re playing at the cut-throat end of football; this is the FA Cup quarter-finals. If you haven’t got the confidence to play, you can flip it and say: “Have you got the b******s to play?”‘

Warnock, who holds the record for the most games managed in English football, knows what he is talking about when he looks to pass on some advice to Lampard and believes the key is on confidence building, at least in the short term.

‘I don’t think you get anywhere team wise by criticising players in public,’ Warnock told the Gary Newbon Sports Show with Jewson

‘Frank Lampard is slightly making a mistake at the moment by going public when you really need to be getting through to the end of the season in Frank’s case and make sure you stay up.

Speaking to the Gary Newbon Sports Show with Jewson, Warnock cast doubt on that approach

‘I don’t think criticising his players in public is going to help him in that and that’s just experience to which he’ll learn from it.

‘You’ve got to put your arm round them tell them how good they are and make them feel how good they are knowing in the back of your mind that you’re going to get rid of them in two months time.

‘But it is the next two months which will keep you up.’

Warnock has relegations to his name but he also has eight promotions and he is convinced that unlocking talent requires managers to ‘bite their tongue’, particularly in a run-in.

‘People would say “how do you tolerate him?” and I’d say “bite your tongue and smile and know that he will help you get the results then you get rid”.’

Everton currently sit 17th in the table, four points above Burnley, who beat them 3-2 at Turf Moor this month, in the relegation zone.

A vital 1-0 over Manchester United has given Everton a springboard to use to pick up enough points for survival across the next eight games.
