Kevin Volland has played down concerns that Germany are nervous as they prepare to take on Portgual on Saturday.

Monaco attacker Volland featured as a late substitute as Germany were beaten 1-0 by France in their opening fixture of Euro 2020.

Joachim Low’s side are in a very difficult group and there is now much pressure on them ahead of the clash with Portugal at the Allianz Arena.

Kevin Volland insisted that Germany aren’t nervous ahead of their clash with Portugal

Volland told goal: ‘We are not nervous, we are all in a good mood and optimistic that we will play a good game against Portugal and get through the group stage.’

Volland believes that, although there is room for improvement, Germany gave a good account of themselves against France.

He said: ‘It’s annoying that we lost the game because we had a decent performance overall. We certainly could have played some situations better, we have to work on that, but the mood is good and we are now looking forward to the next game.’

Volland believes Germany performed well against France despite Mats Hummels’ own goal

If Germany lose to Portugal it would leave them in a difficult situation, although it is still possible that they could progress to the last-16 if they are one of the best third-placed teams.

Low, who will be leaving his position after the tournament, will be desperate to avoid a repeat of what occurred at the 2018 World Cup, when Germany were knocked out in the group stages.

There is much talent in the Germany squad, including the likes of Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan, but Low will be aware that his team will have to improve quickly.

Following the game against Portugal, Germany will round off the group stages by facing Hungary on Wednesday.
