Violent Welsh footy scrap sees punches thrown as referee dishes out 7 red cards

A Welsh football match descended into extreme violence as players from both sides traded blows in a 94th minute mass brawl.

Bangor 1876’s 2-1 victory over Rhyl 1879 was overshadowed by wild scenes in stoppage time as a total of seven people were sent off and bottles were lobbed onto the pitch. One player and a manager had already been given their marching orders before violence erupted.

Five more players were red carded for their role in the shocking brawl, which appeared to break out when two players from the opposing sides were sent off. Unsavoury scenes followed as video footage showed one player twice punching his opponent in the head.

Plenty of pushing and grappling ensued as several bodies appeared to drop as a result of the scuffle, with both sets of players and substitutes involved. And the Football Association of Wales is now set to investigate the incident.

The Daily Post reports that the brawl erupted when a corner was awarded in stoppage time, with Bangor's Tom Clarke down on the turf. Clarke was one of the five players dismissed as several scraps broke out while players waited for a corner to be taken.

Rhyl manager Gareth Thomas and defender Miles Todd had both been sent off earlier. They were joined by Clarke, Alex Jones, Jack Higgins, Aaron White and Corey Jones as the referee decided to blow the final whistle in a bid to end the chaos.

Corrig McGonigle scored the winner for Bangor to end Rhyl’s unbeaten record in the Ardal North West division – a newly formed league which forms the third tier of Welsh football. Thomas, who had been named manager of the month for August and September, did not hold back in condemning the ‘disgraceful’ scenes on show.

He told the club's Twitter account (@rhylfc): "The scenes that have followed at the end are just not good enough. It’s not what anyone's building this club up to be and it’s an absolute disgrace.

“Players can look at it, they’ve got to take responsibility. Not only have they let the club down, they’ve let the hardworking volunteers down here and that was not good enough, and it’s not acceptable. It’s not something that we’ll be carrying on at this club."
