Villarreal president hands Man Utd major transfer boost in chase for Pau Torres
Villarreal president Fernando Roig has given Manchester United a transfer boost as the Red Devils chase Pau Torres.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to sign a new defender to partner Harry Maguire this summer with Europa League winner Torres believed to be a target.
Torres has regularly impressed for Villarreal and shone against potential new club United in Wednesday's final.
And the president of the La Liga club has suggested he will not stand in the 24-year-old's way if he decides to depart.
Though Roig will not let Torres go on the cheap.
"If they arrive with the money and the player wants to move but there must be an agreement between all three parties,” Roig told El Transistor, when asked about the interest of United's rivals Manchester City.
Torres himself was asked about his future before the Europa League final, playing down speculation he could leave Villarreal.
He told the Pure Football podcast: "For now I only think as a player dressed in yellow, I see my life linked to this club.
"For now I have a contract here [until June 2024] and I do not see beyond this final or what may come this summer.
"God willing I can be in the Euros. I only want the first title for my club, for my people, and then to represent Spain in a tournament as big as this."
Following defeat to Villarreal in the Europa League final, which meant another season without a trophy for Manchester United, Solskjaer admitted changes were needed.
He said: “I’ve been delighted with the effort, desire, determination of all the players.
"I can’t fault them at all and we’ve probably done as well as anyone could have imagined. So yeah, those of us who are here now need to do better, we need to work better, work harder, cleverer.
“But as I’ve said, two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad altogether.
"It’s important for us to go even further because I’m sure our challengers will also want to improve so we will want to improve as much as we can.”
