Video of Emmanuel Eboue pretending to understand North Korea tactics goes viral

Former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue is one of football’s funniest characters – and the most hilarious moment of his career came during the 2010 World Cup.

During Ivory Coast’s final group outing against North Korea, the latter’s captain Hong Yong-jo was called over for a brief mid-game team talk with manager Kim Jong-Hun.

Ivory Coast were 3-0 up at the time, but that didn’t stop Eboue from following Yong-jo over to the touchline to listen to his coach’s instructions.

Despite not understanding a single word of the language, the right-back left fans in stitches by nodding along and agreeing before sprinting off.

And a clip of Eboue’s iconic joke, which remains one of the most memorable World Cup moments in recent memory, has recently gone viral on social media.

Back in 2016, Eboue opened up on his hilarious North Korea wind-up and explained exactly what happened during an interview with The Telegraph.

“That time, I honestly don't know what was going on in my head at the time,” the Gunners cult hero said.

“But people aren't going to forget about it." Eboue said.

“When their coach called his captain over, I went close to him, nodded and said, 'OK, no problem, I understand, yeah?'

“It was funny, it was our last game so we were at the airport the next day with the Korean players and one of them came over to me and said, 'Eboue, you speak my language?' I said, 'Yeah'.

“So he says, 'OK, how do you say 'good morning' in Korean? So I shout, 'Yang!!!' and he literally fell on the floor laughing.”

Despite their victory, Eboue and Ivory Coast were dumped out of the 2010 World Cup at the group stage, with Brazil and Portugal instead progressing to the knockout rounds.
