Varane ‘lands in Manchester’ to complete Man Utd medical ahead of transfer

Raphael Varane has landed in Manchester ahead of his medical and to complete his transfer to Manchester United from Real Madrid.

The 28-year-old Frenchman will complete a period of quarantine before undergoing his medical which will be followed by the official announcement of the transfer.

Personal terms and a transfer fee were agreed last month and Varane will soon become United's third signing of the summer after the arrivals of Tom Heaton from Aston Villa and Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

United had previously tried to sign Varane from Real Madrid on three separate occasions in 2011, 2014 and 2018.

Renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday that Varane had landed in Manchester to complete the move and that the official announcement from the club is expected soon.

Varane has agreed a four-year contract with the Red Devils up until the summer of 2025 with the club having the option to extend the deal by a further year.

Romano had previously confirmed on Wednesday night that Varane and his team were ready to travel to the UK after he had been granted a Visa.

Visa issues had slightly held up the move as Varane had planned to arrive in England earlier in the week but he has now begun his quarantining in line with government guidelines before beginning his medical.

United will pay an up front fee of £34million for Varane with add-ons potentially taking the deal for the World Cup winner up to £42million.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have been able to secure a lower fee for the defender as his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu was set to expire in the summer of 2022.

Los Blancos had hoped to start a bidding war for Varane after he informed them he would not sign a new contract and they attempted to drum up interest from Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

This was in vein, however, as Varane made it clear from an early stage in the process that he was only interested in speaking to Manchester United.

Varane spent 10 years in Spain after arriving from Lens in 2011 as an 18-year-old before going on to make 360 appearances for Real, winning 18 trophies in the process including four Champions Leagues and three league titles.
