Since retiring from playing in 2012, Van Nistelrooy has been an assistant with the Holland national team on two occasions – from 2014-2016 and 2019-present – as well as working with the Under-19 and reserve teams at PSV.

He added: ‘In recent years I have been intensively supervised by the club and in particular by Toon Gerbrands (current General Manager of PSV).

‘I was convinced that I could fully direct my own coaching career and that required an extra season of experience as a trainer of Jong PSV. But it turns out not to be direct. This is the time.

‘During the past month, several things came together. The appointment of Marcel Brands as General Manager of PSV and the conversation I had with him gave me the last push to now take this step with full conviction.

‘PSV is going in a new direction this summer and I want to be part of that. Conversations with the entire Board of Directors and the Supervisory Board have strengthened my image of the unity and ambition to achieve something special with PSV in the long term. I am ready to lead the club as head coach.’

Van Nistelrooy, who moved to United in 2001 for a then-club record fee of £18.5m, won a Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup during five successful seasons at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.

He is also well remembered for his role in the Battle of Old Trafford against Arsenal in 2003, playing a part in Patrick Vieira’s sending off before missing a stoppage-time penalty and experiencing Martin Keown’s wrath in the aftermath.

The Dutchman, who scored 35 goals in 70 caps for Holland in a 13-year international career, moved to Real Madrid in 2006 where he won two LaLiga titles.

The forward concluded his playing career by featuring for Hamburg and Malaga.
