Van der Sar responds to claims he will replace Woodward as Man Utd chief
Edwin van der Sar has appeared to pour cold water on reports he will take over Ed Woodward’s role at Manchester United.
The controversial board member will leave his job as chief executive at Old Trafford at the end of the year.
That is set to have a major impact on how transfers will be held, while it remains to be seen who will fulfil the role that is being left behind.
Many United fans are happy to see Woodward leave after he became the main source of blame for the lack of success on the pitch since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.
Over half a billion pounds has been spent since the Scotsman left in 2013 but United have failed to win the Premier League since his reign.
The announcement was made in April that Woodward would fall on his sword amid the European Super League debacle and one potential successor was named as Van der Sar.
The former goalkeeper is a legend at Old Trafford and has been commended for his work at Ajax, who consistently perform a fine job both financially and on the pitch.
However, according to Dutch reporter Elko Born, the 51-year-old insisted he does not expect to be called to take the post.
It was just earlier this week, though, where the Ajax CEO admitted that he can see himself back at United at some point down the line.
Asked about a possible return, Van der Sar told Dutch TV channel RTL7: "I am enjoying myself so much at Ajax, I still have two years left here. I want to keep achieving things here with the club.
“But I am sure that one day the moment will arrive."
Richard Arnold is the heavy favourite to take on Woodward’s role as the current Group Managing Director and Company Director at United.
He has been commended before for his commercial achievements with the club after overseeing a number of lucrative sponsorship contracts.
They include a world-record seven-year deal with Chevrolet worth $600m and struck another whopping agreement with Adidas worth £750m over 10 years.
