Van de Beek's agent concerned about Ronaldo's Man United return

Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Man United is ‘BAD NEWS’ for Donny van de Beek, says £35m misfit midfielder’s agent, after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blocked his move to Everton in search of more game time

  • Cristiano Ronaldo is preparing to play for Manchester United once again
  • Portuguese star returned to Old Trafford in £12m deal after leaving Juventus
  • But Donny van de Beek’s agent believes it’s bad news for the Dutchman
  • He fears Paul Pogba will move back into midfield, squeezing his game time
  • Van de Beek started just four Premier League matches during his debut season

Donny van de Beek’s agent fears Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United will further squeeze the Dutchman’s game time at Old Trafford.

The midfielder has yet to feature for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side this season having started just four Premier League matches in 2020-21.

And now the arrival of Portuguese superstar Ronaldo for a second spell at Old Trafford looks likely to bump him even further down the pecking order.

Donny van de Beek’s agent believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s return is ‘bad news’ for the midfielder

The Dutchman spent much of his debut season warming the bench with United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer using him sparingly in the big games

United sealed the sensational return of the 36-year-old last week for an initial £12.85million after he decided to leave Juventus.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport in Holland, Van de Beek’s agent Guido Albers said: ‘Cristiano arrived on Friday which we knew was bad news for us.

‘[Paul] Pogba plays on the left, and with Cristiano’s arrival it means another extra player in midfield with Pogba moving away from the left.

‘We had conversations with Solskjaer and the board. We took the initiative to find a club and our search ended up at Everton. We opened talks with Marcel Brands and Farhad Moshiri.

‘On Monday night [prior to deadline day] we received a call from Solskjaer and the club who told us that a transfer was out of the question and that he had to report himself to training the next morning.’

Van de Beek featured in 36 matches across all competitions during his debut season at United, following a £35m move from Ajax, but the majority of them were substitute appearances.

He started four matches in the FA Cup and three in the Carabao Cup but failed to make much of an impression.

Albers expects his client to play more frequently despite competition from Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and others in the United midfield.

Van de Beek has yet to play a single minute for United this season and his agent fears his opportunities will be further squeezed if Paul Pogba moves back into midfield

He said: ‘The perspective now is that we stated that Donny is not a Carabao Cup player, or FA Cup player, or to play only in European games. Donny went to England to play in the Premier League.

‘The way the conversation went this time [with Solskjaer] compared to last summer… things are much more clear now. I have full expectations that Donny will get his chance now.

‘Donny worked extremely hard in the summer. He only had seven days off. The rest of the summer he trained to become top fit. He is totally ready.’

Ronaldo – who played for six seasons at United between 2003 and 2009, helping them win three Premier League titles and the Champions League before moving to Real Madrid – could make his return in Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United.
