Van de Beek 'will be important' for Man United, insists Solskjaer

Donny van de Beek ‘will be important’ for Manchester United, insists Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager gives much-maligned midfielder hope of featuring more this season… despite not playing a single minute so far

  • Donny van de Beek has been an unused substitute at Man United so far this term
  • The 24-year-old made just four Premier League starts for the club last season too
  • United travel to Wolves next on Sunday, with the Dutchman hoping to play a part

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has intimated that Donny van de Beek does have a role to play at Manchester United this season despite not having kicked a ball in a competitive outing so far.

Van de Beek has been an unused substitute in both of the Red Devils’ Premier League matches so far this season in the 5-1 win over rivals Leeds and Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Southampton.

The Holland international has watched on as fellow central midfielders Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic have all played in one of the two pivot positions, while Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes have been deployed in more attacking roles.

And despite the current situation, Solskjaer has moved to confirm that the midfielder is part of his plans this term.

‘Whenever you don’t win a game you look at it but I always look at it as much when you win as well,’ he said upon reflection of United’s draw at Southampton.

‘What could we have done differently?

‘I thought Nemanja [Matic] was excellent, Antho [Martial] was close to scoring a goal but Jadon [Sancho] and Donny will be important for us.’

The 24-year-old’s debut campaign at United last season often saw him watch on from the sides

Van de Beek will hope this rings true on Sunday when the Red Devils head to Molineux to face Wolves in the Premier League next.

His lack of playing time sparks a case of deja-vu from the previous campaign where he was the sixth-choice central midfielder, starting just four times in the Premier League, despite being bought for £40million from Ajax that summer window.

The 24-year-old’s lack of minutes so far is equally as startling, considering only he and Matic were the two central midfielders not on international duty this summer and therefore were able to undergo a full pre-season with Solskjaer’s squad.
