USA claimed they ‘won 1-1’ against England when sides met at 2010 World Cup
One American newspaper took the phrase "sometimes a draw is as good as a win" to new heights at the 2010 World Cup.
As in Qatar, the United States found themselves in the same group as England in South Africa, although back then the trans-Atlantic neighbours clashed in the opening game, not the second encounter.
Slated as one of the pre-tournament favourites, England had been expected to beat the USA – and things couldn't have started any better as Steven Gerrard put Fabio Capello's side 1-0 up inside four minutes.

However, the Three Lions couldn't hold on to that lead and were pegged back five minutes before half-time when Clint Dempsey's speculative strike slipped through the fingers of England stopper Rob Green.
England had opportunities to restore their advantage but were unable to take them as Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney, and Shaun-Wright Phillips all squandered chances to make it 2-1.

The Three Lions ultimately had to settle for a draw, sharing the points with their American counterparts. But one US-based paper didn't quite see things the same way, running a now-famous front page about the result.
Framed as a "World Cup shock" and the "Greatest tie against the British since bunker hill," the newspaper used a snap of Dempsey celebrating with the headline: "USA wins 1-1."
Although the headline miffed England fans at the time, it was actually a play on a 1968 headline from the Harvard student newspaper after the university came from behind in an American football game against Yale.
Harvard fought back to secure a 29-29 draw, leading the paper to proclaim "Harvard beats Yale 29-29".
England supporters will be hoping they don't have to witness similar headlines when the two nations meet again on Friday. The Three Lions won their first World Cup 6-2 against Iran, while USA drew 1-1 with Wales.
