Raphael Varane was branded 'unreal' for his clearance by Man United fans who labelled David de Gea a 'clown' for nearly conceding a goal.

De Gea failed to keep hold of a scorching effort from Sevilla on the stroke of half-time, and Varane was on hand to pick up the pieces as he raced back to prevent the ball from falling into United's net with a last-gasp header. And the defender's valiant effort was applauded on social media, while De Gea was lambasted for causing the near-mess.

One fan fumed on Twitter: "De gea is an absolute clown mate. What’s he doing on the floor after Hollywood save like he’s been fouled." And a second supporter raged: "He was laying on the floor watching the ball mate. Shocking reactions lucky Varane saved him. Was straight at him why’s he laying down like he’s been shot."

A third person declared: "Varane saved De Gea there. That would've gone down as a goalkeeping mistake. Why is he diving at a ball that's hit straight at him? He almost punched it into his own net." Then, a fourth fan quizzed: "He fell onto the floor after punching a ball and then didn’t even attempt to claim it. Who punches the ball in the air when their six-yard box is so crowded?"

Some fans preferred to focus on Varane, who preserved United's 2-0 lead, and one added: "What a goal-line clearance by Varane." Another user followed this up with: "That’s a crazy clearance from Varane omg."

However, Varane won't be able to produce any more heroics in the game after he went off injured after half-time. He went down in a heap as the first-half drew to a close, but was able to carry on playing until the whistle, although he was replaced by Harry Maguire in the second period in what seems to be a precautionary measure from United boss Erik Ten Hag.
