Vladimir Petkovic’s side will take on Spain in the quarter finals of Euro 2020 on July 3.
France was leading 3-1 with 10 minutes to play in regulation time but two late goals from Switzerland crushed Les Bleus’ celebrations.
Thirty minutes of added time couldn’t break the deadlock and when Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved a penalty from gun French striker Kylian Mbappe, it was all over.
It means France is now out of the tournament.
The football world lost its mind at the extraordinary sequence of events that made the clash the most memorable of the tournament.

Remarkably, it came right after a mind-blowing game between Spain and Croatia. Like France, Spain was up 3-1 with 10 minutes to go but Croatia hit back with goals in the 85th and 92nd minutes to make it 3-3.
The Spaniards scored two goals in extra time to save their blushes and progress.
Football world can’t believe its eyes
NBC Sports anchor Joe Prince-Wright tweeted: “I cannot believe this. Wow. This is epic. What a game. What a moment. What a day.”
Former England star Gary Lineker also got in on the action, stating: “This might be the best day’s football I’ve ever watched. 2 extraordinary games that are almost the mirror image of each other. Unbelievable scenes.”
Ex-Socceroo Ned Zelic tweeted: “WTF… Brilliant theatre.”
Football journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke said: “When was the last day of football THIS good??”
Peter Polycarpou tweeted: “Well, I’ve seen it all. Today was the greatest day of football I can remember.”
Fabrizio Romano said: “Football, bloody hell.”

The Swiss opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Haris Seferovic, but saw a golden opportunity to extend their lead denied.
A stunning save from French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the 55th minute sparked a move that saw Karim Benzema level the scores in the 57th minute.
The Real Madrid striker found the net again just two minutes after, heading in the rebound after Swiss keeper Yann Sommer saved a short-range effort from Antoine Griezmann.
Paul Pogba added a third for the French in the 75th minute with a long-range screamer, caressing the ball into the top right corner.
But just when it seemed as if the outcome was a fait accompli, Switzerland wouldn’t lie down. Seferovic got his second of the night in the 81st minute, and Mario Gavranovic sent Swiss fans into raptures with a stoppage-time equaliser.

Spain vs Croatia
Alvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal scored extra-time goals as Spain beat Croatia 5-3 in an epic tie in Copenhagen on Monday to secure a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020.
Spain had looked to be cruising into the last eight at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen thanks to goals from Pablo Sarabia, Cesar Azpilicueta and Ferran Torres which had put Luis Enrique’s side 3-1 ahead with 13 minutes remaining in normal time.
The biggest talking point of the game came via Pedri’s own goal, after Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon allowed his bobbling back-pass to bounce over his foot and gently roll into the net.

However substitute Mislav Orsic pulled one back following a chaotic goalmouth scramble in the 85th minute and then supplied the cross from which Mario Pasalic headed Croatia level in the second minute of stoppage time to take the match to the additional half-hour.

Spain eventually prevailed — after some scares — in a thrilling contest with a fine finish from under-fire forward Morata and Oyarzabal’s breakaway strike giving Luis Enrique’s side the win their overall play deserved.
Spain had not won a major tournament knockout match since thrashing Italy in the Euro 2012 final but now progress to a quarter-final in Saint Petersburg.
