Newcastle United have reportedly failed in their pursuit of Unai Emery after “p***ing off” the Villarreal manager.
Emery emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Steve Bruce as Newcastle manager over the weekend but a number of outlets have reported that the former Arsenal boss will now be remaining in Spain.
The coach was in talks with the relegation-battling club, who have identified Emery and Eddie Howe as two potential men who could lead the club forward following their £300million Saudi-led takeover.
But Spanish outlet Marca, via Sport Witness, report the move has broken down, with Emery phoning Villarreal president Fernando Roig at 1am to inform of his decision.
His side secured a 2-0 win over Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday evening as rumours circulated surrounding his impending return to England.
And it appears Emery has been angered by “fake news” regarding his talks with Newcastle, which threatened to distract his team on the day of a crucial European tie.
Marca said: “The Basque coach did not like how the English media were giving details and airing rumours or fake news, such as meetings by videoconference or that it was decided that he would train on Thursday at St. James Park, or that on Saturday he would sit on the bench for the black and white team in the game against Brighton.”
The Athletic journalist George Caulkin also added: “Emery/ Villarreal camps deeply p****ed off by strength of reports of interest on day of massive CL game.

“He was/is No.1 choice but as stated yesterday, there’s no agreement on wages. Can it be resurrected? They’ll try but we’ll have to wait & see.”
Whether Emery’s decision is set in stone remains unclear but Newcastle still have the other significant hurdle of agreeing personal terms with the four-time Europa League winner.
The Athletic claimed on Tuesday that “nothing was agreed” despite talks between Emery and the Magpies being positive, with a reported fee of £5.1million needed to be paid in compensation to Villarreal if they are to secure his services.
Emery’s side are currently 13th in La Liga and on track to qualify for the Champions League knock-out stages while Newcastle are yet to win a league game this season.
