Unai Emery responds to Newcastle United link
Unai Emery claims he is in the dark about a potential move to Newcastle United.
The 49-year-old is currently in his second campaign with Villarreal having won the Europa League last season.
Newcastle are still looking for a new permanent manager after sacking Steve Bruce last month and appointing Graeme Jones on an interim basis.
Several names have been linked with a move to St James’ Park but according to Sport1, Emery is at the top of Newcastle’s shortlist and the club are pushing to bring the former Arsenal manager back to the Premier League.
Emery’s current contract with Villarreal ends in 2023 and the report claims that Newcastle are willing to ‘pay a hefty transfer fee’ to bring him to St James’ Park next week before the international break begins.
Lucien Favre, who was sacked by Borussia Dortmund nearly a year ago, was also on Newcastle’s shortlist but Emery is now the standout candidate.
However, when asked about the speculation linking him with a move to Newcastle, Emery replied: ‘The truth is that I do not know anything.’
Newcastle are currently 19th in the Premier League and are without a win in their opening 10 games.
Emery, meanwhile, has seen his Villarreal side make a poor start to the new season as they have registered just two wins in 11 La Liga matches.
The Spanish club will play Young Boys in their Champions League Group F fixture on Tuesday.
