Unai Emery one game away from breaking staggering Prem record at Aston Villa

Unai Emery is one game away from breaking a staggering Premier League record with his on-fire Aston Villa side.

The Spanish manager has transformed the Villa Park outfit since his arrival last October. Having inherited the side from Steven Gerrard when they were just above the relegation zone, they now find themselves sixth in the table and dominated third-placed Newcastle in a 3-0 win.

Jacob Ramsey's early strike got them off to a flyer before a second-half brace from Ollie Watkins cemented a well-deserved victory in the early kick-off on Saturday (April 15) afternoon.

The goals also saw Emery become just the third manager in history to see his side score in all of their first 18 games in charge, following in the footsteps of Mike Walker, who achieved the feat with Norwich in 1992, and former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti.

If Villa can find the back of the net on their travels at Brentford next week, he'll become the record holder with 19 and counting. They've picked up 38 points from 18 games under his guidance.

That includes their current run of five wins on the trot – the first time they've managed such a run in the Prem this century.

With their form peaking at the business end of the campaign, Emery is targeting European qualification for next season.

He told Match of the Day: "Our target was to be top ten, we have to now get the second target to fight to be accounted and fight for a European position.

"Yes, the first target was to escape the bottom, we did, the next was to get in the top-half, we are. We are being very demanding to add a new target top be in the top six.

"But of course we are going to face the teams that are now fighting for that. Today we showed and we believe with our supporters we can do that."
