Tyrone Mings shares vile racial slur and makes “fight for change” in plea
Aston Villa star Tyrone Mings has vowed to “fight for change” after becoming the latest footballer to receive racist abuse on social media.
Mings shared a horrendous message he had been sent which includes a racial slur and was sent to him on Instagram.
"Another day in the life of social media with no filter," said Mings.
"Please don't feel sorry for us, just stand side by side in the fight for change – social media isn't getting any safer without it."
Liverpool players Trent Alexander-Arnold, Naby Keita and Sadio Mane were sent racist comments earlier this week.
Birmingham City, Swansea and Scottish champions Rangers all took part in a week-long boycott of social media in an attempt to combat abuse.
Aston Villa hit out at the abusers, condemning the message sent to Mings.
"In the early hours of this morning, Tyrone received an abhorrent and vile private message on his social media account," said a club statement.
"We condemn all forms of racial discrimination and will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Tyrone, who is an inspirational figure at the forefront of the fight against racism.
"The club will continue to work closely with the Premier League, football authorities and social media platforms to tackle this disgraceful online behaviour."
Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Chelsea star Reece James are among others to have described racist messages they have been sent in recent weeks.
“I keep hearing stats from social media companies talking about how many posts they have taken down before they get to an individual – that’s irrelevant,” said Kick It Out boss Tony Burnett.

“The posts that cause the offence and cause the hurt and cause the pain are the ones that get through.
“They’re still getting through in numbers which are just inexplicable so not enough is being done, and I’m sick of platitudes on this, we want to see action.
“We support football and our partners in football that are taking direct action. If that’s a boycott, fantastic, we’ll get absolutely behind you on it.”
