Play was suspended in a Turkish derby between Goztepe and Altay as the latter’s goalkeeper was hit by a fan with the corner flag. Ozan Evrim Ozenc was struck as a fan entered the pitch with the flag and went behind the stopper before striking him.
The supporter was swiftly wrestled the floor after the incident, as Ozenc was outside of his penalty area as a player was receiving treatment due to an injury which meant ambulances were called to the pitch.
The two sides are sat in midtable, Goztepe were relegated from the Turkish Super League last season, but disturbances in the stands meant that play was stopped and the goalkeeper was awaiting play to resume before he was attacked.
A fan seemingly rushed onto the field of play and attacked the goalkeeper, though his team-mates were on the scene quickly to prevent any more damage by the supporter. There is yet to be an update on whether Ozenc was injured by the attack.
Play had to be suspended before the 25th minute as the derby in Izmir descended into chaos, as a fan was also injured according to Goztepe who posted on social media about the incident.
“We wish a speedy recovery to our fans, who were seriously injured by a flare fired from the Altay away stand,” the tweet read. “Those who caused these events WE WANT HE TO BE TRIED WITH THE SEVERE PENALTY!”
The club continued to accuse Altay fans on social media. “The situation where the flare thrown by the away tribune and causing the events to start brought our supporters.
“Anyone who puts this cartridge in the stadium, allows it to be inserted, fires it has a share in the landing of that stick on the head! He is guilty!”
