Tuchel explains why he’s not fussed Mendy was snubbed for Ballon d’Or shortlist
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel had admitted that Edouard’s Mendy’s snub from the Ballon d’Or shortlist “does not bother me too much” after the goalkeeper’s incredible performance against Brentford.
Ben Chilwell’s stunning half volley was enough to overcome Thomas Frank’s side 1-0 at the Brentford Community Stadium.
But while the Chelsea defender’s second goal in two Premier League matches secured the three points, it was Mendy at the other end who really secured the three points.
He made four spectacular saves in the last fifteen minutes from the likes of Pontus Jansson and Christian Norgaard to secure a hard-fought victory for the Blues.
And with the spectacular performance coming just days after being left out of the Ballon d’Or nominations, it was a display which sent a hard-hitting message.
However, Tuchel maintained his stance of not being too dispirited that Mendy was not included in the nominations.
“It’s more important that he performs like this than he is on any list,” said the Chelsea boss.

“I hope it does not bother him because it does not bother me too much.
“It seems like he is not influenced from that, which is a good thing.”
Despite becoming the first African goalkeeper to win the Champions League, Mendy was still omitted from the 30-man list for the Ballon D’Or.
Chelsea had five players nominated for the grand prize, with Mason Mount, Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, and £98m summer arrival Romelu Lukaku earning nominations.

However, Tuchel feels his side’s performances last season were more a team effort, rather than the result of outstanding individuals.
He added: “You know, I think that we could be on that list as a whole team, because we won the trophy as a team, and if we have five names or six names, does not matter.
“I have the feeling we won it with 21 – 23 guys, and everybody played this role.
“That’s how football works, and today, we relied heavily on him again.”
