Tuchel ‘begged’ not to be sacked by Chelsea in phone call as details emerge

Thomas Tuchel 'begged' not to be sacked by Chelsea during the phone call where he was sacked, according to new details.

Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday morning that they had parted company with Tuchel in the wake of Tuesday's embarrassing Champions League defeat away to Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb. After the match, Tuchel had told the media that "everything is missing" from the club at the moment, before being dismissed by the board the following morning.

According to The Sun, Tuchel arrived at Chelsea's Cobham training ground on Wednesday with the intention of giving his players a dressing down following their performance in Croatia.

However, the report states that nobody was there to meet him and he was instead ordered to attend a conference call with chairman Todd Boehly and the rest of the board.

During the 10-minute call, it is understood that Tuchel pleaded not to be sacked and asked the board to give him a second chance.

He is said to have been left 'totally shocked' by the decision to dismiss him, before collecting his belongings, saying his final goodbyes and leaving the training ground.

Tuchel's sacking is also reportedly not down to Chelsea's recent results and could still have occurred even if the Blues had beaten Zagreb in their Champions League opener.

The former manager's strained relationship with the new owners is thought to have been a contributing factor, with Tuchel's stance on the potential signing of Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer said to have worsened things.

It has also been claimed that several members of the playing squad had been gossiping about the manager behind his back, in particular about his divorce and younger girlfriend.

Both Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane have emerged as potential candidates to replace Tuchel, meanwhile, Chelsea have been given permission to speak to Brighton & Hove Albion boss Graham Potter.

The Seagulls gaffer is expected to meet with the Chelsea board later on Wednesday as their search for Tuchel's replacement begins to gather pace.
