Poor Kieran Trippier just can't catch a break at the moment.
The Newcastle full-back had another night to forget at Stamford Bridge as his mistake led to Chelsea's late equaliser before he fired his penalty well wide in the subsequent shootout. Newcastle looked to be heading through to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after Callum Wilson's 15th-minute opener.
But Trippier's error in the second minute of second half stoppage time allowed Mykhaylo Mudryk a golden opportunity to score and level things up to force the game to spot kicks. A whipped cross in from the right by Chelsea's Malo Gusto bounced awkwardly in front of Trippier at the back post, but he failed to deal with it, merely getting his head to it and nodding it into Mudryk's path.

The Ukrainian winger made no mistake, sending the home crowd into raptures while Trippier could only fall to the turf in despair. His night was only going to get worse from there, as he made a terrible mess of his penalty – his team's second – by shanking it horribly wide as Chelsea went on to win the shootout and dump Newcastle out.
It's been a nightmare few weeks for the England international, who was involved in an angry exchange with a Newcastle fan following their defeat to Bournemouth last month. Trippier has seemed almost cursed since; he made two identical errors in the 3-0 defeat to Everton earlier this month to start off his horror run.
A few days later he was given a torrid time by Son Heung-min as the Tottenham forward turned him inside out on two occasions to set up his team-mates to score in the 4-1 drubbing. His latest howlers will no doubt hurt the most, though, after Newcastle lost in last season's Carabao Cup final and will have had belief they could go one better this time round.

Former Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling felt sympathy for the defender, tweeting: "Great pens from Chelsea but you have to feel for Trippier. Been brilliant for Newcastle for last couple of seasons but his confidence rock bottom after a difficult last few weeks."
Meanwhile, Liverpool fans were quick to stick the boot in on Trippier, who has regularly been selected ahead of Reds star Trent Alexander-Arnold for England. A number of Liverpool supporters were tweeting: "Trent would never" immediately after Trippier's quick-fire clangers.
One tweeted: "Think I’ve seen Trippier make more errors leading to goals this season than Trent has in his whole career," while another declared: "Trent has never ever cost us a game like Trippier just did then but one is labelled a bad defender, the other is labelled a great defender."
