Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted that he had to switch his TV off when Manchester United lifted the Carabao Cup at Wembley last Sunday.
The England star’s career has been dominated by Liverpool success alongside rivals Man United enduring a disappointing post-Fergie era.
But since Erik ten Hag took over last summer, United have been flying and Liverpool have been floundering.
Speaking about watching United win their first trophy since 2017, Alexander-Arnold told The Telegraph: ‘I watched the game, but as soon as they were getting ready for the trophy lift I turned off. I thought, “There is no way I am watching that”.
‘Knowing they lifted that trophy? It burns. Oh yeah. It definitely burns.’

Twelve months ago, it was Alexander-Arnold’s side dancing at Wembley and being probed with questions about a possible quadruple. Now, he has had to watch Liverpool’s biggest rivals do the same.
The England right-back admitted it shows how quickly football can change, citing Arsenal as an example of a side who were lambasted for not making the top four last season, yet are now on there way to a possible first Premier League title in 19 years.
Alexander-Arnold says that is why he is not going to get ‘over consumed with what has happened to us right now’ because he knows how quickly things can change.
Despite the sporting world writing Liverpool’s title hopes off several months ago, 24-year-old Alexander-Arnold took much longer to accept his side’s fate.
‘I realised we had to change objectives before the Everton game (February 13), after we had lost to Wolves 3-0.’
The right-back opened up about the squad having to sit down and address what their adjusted goals were for the season, after writing off a 20th title – which would put them level with United.
The 24-year-old also only gave up on Liverpool’s title hopes last month after they were beaten 3-0 by Wolves
Alexander-Arnold added: ‘Now it is going to be difficult to win a trophy this season. It looks impossible. We will need a miracle, really. So there is a different type of motivation and it is difficult to adjust. We have drawn a line and know the top four is everything now.’
Jurgen Klopp’s resurgent Reds have got back in with a chance of a top four place, after keeping four consecutive clean sheets, with three victories in those matches.
They are now just six points behind Tottenham in the race for the Champions League – also with two games in hand. Alexander-Arnold admitted he can’t imagine not playing Champions League football because it has been a constant in his career.
Next up, Alexander-Arnold faces Marcus Rashford and Co at Anfield in one of the biggest games every season. The defender admitted this week that it will be ‘difficult’ to keep his in-form England team-mate Rashford quiet.
