Trent Alexander-Arnold out of England's Euro 2020 squad with thigh injury
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out of England’s Euro 2020 campaign this summer after picking up a serious quad injury in the friendly against Austria on Wednesday night.
The Liverpool full-back tore a muscle late in the game in Middlesbrough as he played a long-ball unchallenged.
It is incredibly unlucky for the 22-year-old who now faces between four and six weeks out of action with the injury, according to the Athletic.
Things did not look good for Alexander-Arnold as he limped off the pitch at the Riverside Stadium and scans have confirmed that the quad muscle has indeed been torn and he has been forced out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
The England boss is able to bring in a replacement for the Liverpool man, with Jesse Lingard, James Ward-Prowse, Ollie Watkins, Ben Godfrey and Ben White all possible replacements, although none will be like-for-like.
Southgate had already chosen three other right-backs in his 26-man squad – Kyle Walker, Reece James and Kieran Trippier – so it is a position in which England are well stocked, but that will be no comfort to Alexander-Arnold who will return to Liverpool for treatment, leaving the squad on Thursday night.
After the 1-0 win over Austria on Wednesday Southgate admitted that things did not look good for the full-back.
‘We’ve got to see, it’s obviously not a good sign that he’s had to walk off the pitch, and he was in some discomfort,’ said the England manager.
‘We’re so close to the finals that for any player, injuries makes them a doubt. But we will just have to see over the next 48 hours.’
