Transfer rumour rater – Ronaldo to Newcastle and Zaha to Barcelona among gossip

The January transfer window is open and you know what that means: the rumours are going to be flying.

And for every Fabrizio Romano breaking big-money deals, there’s a friend’s cousin’s hairdresser who spotted a player stocking up on shopping in the local Waitrose.

So, to try to distinguish between what is genuine insider knowledge and what is just the product of wishful thinking, overactive imaginations and too much tea, we have taken a look at the latest gossip in our transfer rumour rater.

Zaha to Barcelona

Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha has emerged as a transfer target for Barcelona, according toSPORT. The Catalan giants are suffering from Financial Fair Play problems and with Memphis Depay looking to be on his way, Zaha is seen as a perfect no-cost replacement. Zaha, who has six goals this season, is entering the final months of his contract at Selhurst Park and has shown no sign of renewing.

Soyuncu to Atletico Madrid

Unable to get a game with a struggling Leicester City, Caglar Soyuncu could be thrust straight into a fight for a Champions League spot if Fabrizio Romano is to be believed. The transfer guru says Atletico Madrid are trying to wrap up a January move for the Foxes defender, who has made just one Premier League appearance for Brendan Rodgers’ side this season.

Romano says the Spanish club, who sit fourth in LaLiga, have an agreement in place to sign the Turkish defender in the summer when his contract expires but are trying to rush through a deal to bring him in in this window.

Ronaldo to Newcastle

After departing Old Trafford under a cloud, could we see Cristiano Ronaldo back in the Premier League for one final hurrah? Well,Marcaare reporting that a clause has been entered into his Al Nassr contract which will allow him to move to Newcastle United if they qualify for the Champions League for 2023-24. Current Newcastle no.7 Joelinton will be watching developments with interest…

Alan Varela to Newcastle

The Magpies are also reportedly interested in signing Boca Juniors ‘wonderkid’ Alan Varela. D Sports Radio, who describe themselves as the sound of sport (so that’s grunting, cheering and swearing, no doubt) say Newcastle have bid around £16m for the 21-year-old, which is a little short of his release clause.

The defensive midfielder, who has already made close to 80 appearances for Boca, was one of ten players red-carded in a fiery Argentine Trophy of Champions final against Racing Club in November.
