The World Cup is winding down and the January transfer window is simultaneously edging closer, with clubs around Europe putting plans in place to bolster their squads. At such an early stage of the season, there is plenty to fight for in the Premier League and beyond as sides look to gain a competitive edge in the market.
Manchester United and Liverpool both face uncertainty with their respective owners supposedly looking to sell up, but that hasn’t stopped links to some of the continent’s brightest stars. Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is still keen to bring in a new attacker after Cristiano Ronaldo’s bitter exit, while Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have ground to make up.
The World Cup will have given clubs plenty of inspiration with the likes of Sofyan Amrabat, Azzedine Ounahi and Cody Gakpo seeing their stock increase. Transfer action won’t be limited to teams at the top of the Premier League, either, as Aston Villa and Wolves supposedly plot ambitious moves after the New Year.

Arsenal eye Partey replacement
Arsenal are interested in Vitoria Guimaraes youngster Ibrahima Bamba, according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo.
Bamba is ‘practically certain’ to leave in January with the Gunners and Paris Saint-Germain among those to show an interest in the midfielder.
Manager Mikel Arteta could be wise to put long-term plans in place with Thomas Partey, who plays in the same position as Bamba, now approaching his 30th birthday with two-and-a-half years left on his contract.

Liverpool told Fernandez fee
Liverpool face the prospect of forking out Enzo Fernandez’s huge £103million release clause to prise him away from Benfica, according to 90min.
Reports from Fernandez’s native Argentina suggested that the Reds had already reached a pre-agreement with the 21-year-old ahead of next summer.
Although Liverpool have registered an interest, it is not thought to be more advanced at this stage with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona also keen.
Fernandez is set for a World Cup final appearance on Sunday with Argentina due to take on France.
Man Utd meeting
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly been told in a meeting with CEO Richard Arnold that the club’s takeover could lead to more money being made available in the transfer market.
Ten Hag already splashed out during the summer with the likes of Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro taking United’s spend considerably over-budget.
But ground still needs to be made up on the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, who have set the early Premier League pace this campaign.
“We spoke about the culture, objectives and goals we want, and he confirmed it won’t change,” said Ten Hag. “It will be even better because more money will become available for this project.
“My information is that it will only be a good thing because there will be more investment possible, which is good.”
