Richarlison’s injury could finally give a chance for Bryan Gil at Tottenham. Richarlison injured his calf during Saturday’s win over former club Everton and he could now be a doubt for the World Cup.
The Brazilian has become a fan favourite at Spurs since his arrival from the Toffees. But he is now set for a period on the sidelines.
That could therefore give a chance to forgotten man Gil. The Spaniard has made two substitute appearances in the Champions League this season and looked bright against Frankfurt on Wednesday.
Gil’s Spurs career failed to take off following his arrival from Sevilla in the summer of 2021. He moved back to Spain in January, joining Valencia on loan for the remainder of the season.
But he has now got the chance to prove to Antonio Conte he has made the necessary improvements to succeed in English football. Conte recently spoke on the 21-year-old and insisted he was an “important prospect” for the club.
The Italian said of Gil: “I ask only to give me the opportunity to be relaxed and if I give the opportunity to these players to play, only this. Gil is a really good prospect.
“He is becoming stronger, physically. Because he has in this moment only this gap for Premier League, it’s physical, you know?
“Otherwise technically he understands football in an important way. I’m sure that we’re talking about a player that will be an important prospect for the future. Now he’s building also, he’s improving on the physical aspect and for us that’s important.”
Richarlison left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on crutches on Saturday. Conte is unsure over when he will return and also does not want to rush Dejan Kulusevski back, with the Swede having not featured since the recent international break.

Conte said after Saturday’s win: “Yeah for sure [Richarlison’s] out against Manchester United, for sure. He felt something in his calf and he won’t be available for that game.
“I don’t know but I think he needs a bit of time to recover. It’s a pity because we are talking about a player that gives us a lot of quality but at the same time also is strong and he improves our intensity.
“The problem with Kulusevski also needs time to recover. Fingers crossed for the next games because we have to play many many games in a short period.
“If you have the squad penalised with injuries it becomes a bit difficult but today we showed that we are ready to overcome every difficulty.”
