Tottenham’s attempts to sign top target Pedro Porro this month could be OFF… with Spurs struggling to agree over the payment structure of a potential deal with Sporting Lisbon

  • They were confident of completing a deal for him before the window closes

Tottenham have hit a hitch in their pursuit to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Porro, with the clubs struggling to agree over a payment structure on the deal – and the Portuguese side may now call the move off.

Spurs have made the Spanish star – who was at Manchester City between 2019 and 2022 – their main target for this window, given Antonio Conte’s side remain vulnerable at the back and lack creativity going forward.

Sportsmail previously reported how they were close to agreeing a fee after Spurs had a £32.5m offer rejected for Porro – who impressed against Tottenham in the Champions League group stages earlier this season – but the move is now in doubt.

Tottenham have been growing frustrated with Sporting dragging their feet over a deal but they thought they had made progress earlier this week.

The player was ready to sign after the Portuguese League Cup final on Saturday and pen a five-and-a-half year deal with Conte’s side.

But Sporting could now call off the move and Porro is waiting to see if a deal can be sorted.

Tottenham have felt the need to recruit in the right-wing-back area, with Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty failing to convince – while youngster Djed Spence has lacked minutes – and he could depart on loan this month.

Spurs hope to make Porro their second signing after they brought in Arnaut Danjuma this week

Spurs have been trying to wrap up the deal as quickly as possible over fears their London rivals Chelsea were going to hijack the transfer.

They had a £32.5m offer rejected but talks resumed this week over a revised structure of payments plus bonuses and a possible player in return.

The 23-year-old, who has operated as a wing-back for Sporting too, has made 96 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and providing 20 assists.

The Portuguese giants are considering signing out of favour Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey on loan until the end of the season as a replacement.

If Spurs can sort out a deal for Porro, it would add to their acquisition of Arnaut Danjuma, who they stole from Everton at the 11th-hour on a loan deal until the end of the season.
