Tottenham warned of signing ‘another Jadon Sancho’ in James Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur confirm Postecoglou appointment

Tottenham have been warned by Stan Collymore that James Maddison could follow the path of Jadon Sancho after Spurs reportedly prepared a £40million bid for the Leicester star. Sancho has underwhelmed since his £73m move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund but Ange Postecoglu will hope that Maddison can thrive in north London.

Spurs and Newcastle have both held an interest in Maddison but Postecoglu’s side are set to make the opening bid as they are planning to table £40m for the England man, in the hopes that Leicester will reduce their £60m valuation. Maddison has just a year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium following their relegation and would be keen on resuming his career in the Premier League.

Former Liverpool striker Collymore, however, has questioned whether Maddison would be able to translate his performances to a top club and compared him to Mason Mount – who is wanted by United. “Maddison will leave Leicester City as the biggest fish in a small pond, and if he went to Old Trafford, suddenly he’d be a very small fish in an ocean,” Collymore wrote in his CaughtOffside column.

“Would he rise to the occasion and thrive off the pressure, or would he shrink? – All you have to do for an example of what the latter looks like is look at Jadon Sancho.

“Someone asked me recently – if Man United are happy to spend £50m on a midfielder and have identified an England international in his mid-20s as the ideal candidate then why don’t they go for James Maddison from Leicester City?

“It’s a good question, but signing Maddison is a completely different prospect to signing Mount, and I think that’s why we’re seeing the likes of Spurs and Newcastle linked with him, and Man United and Liverpool linked with Mount – and that’s no disrespect to either of the former, but it’s telling of where the sides are in terms of their projects.”

Newcastle’s interest in Maddison has cooled after sealing a deal for AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali and remain concerned about the effects of Financial Fair Play. Collymore believes that the Leicester star would be “ideal” for Eddie Howe’s side, however, but once again questioned whether he could play for a side at the very top of English football.

“Newcastle are a club looking to build and take the next step, as are Spurs; so a player like Maddison, who has great credentials, such as being a senior England international, is an ideal target,” Collymore added.

“However, when it comes to the possibility of him joining a high-pressured club like United or even Liverpool, nobody knows how he’s going to respond yet. Mount, on the other hand, despite being just 24 years old, has already proven he can make that step up. He has a Champions League winner’s medal to prove it.”
