Tottenham have been told that selling Harry Kane for £88million in the summer would represent “good business” as the England captain has been linked with a move to Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Spurs’ star man has less than two years left on his contract at the club and he does not appear to be close to extending his deal to stay in north London.
Bayern Munich’s CEO Oliver Kahn and head coach Julian Nagelsmann have both spoken openly of their desire to bring Kane to the Bundesliga to follow Sadio Mane, while Chelsea co-owner and acting sporting director Todd Boehly is reportedly keen on bringing established Premier League talent to Stamford Bridge, including Kane.
Bayern are prepared to spend £88m on Kane even though he could leave for free in 2024 according to Munich-based newspaper TZ, a fee which former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes would be a “great deal” if Kane turns down the offer to extend his stay at the club. “I think £88million for a player with 12 months left on his contract would be good business,” Robinson told Football Insider.
“Regardless of who you are, that is a big transfer fee considering you are into the final year of your contract. That would be a pretty good deal for Spurs. Do not get me wrong though, Spurs have to exhaust every opportunity to tie him down to a new deal, He is invaluable and in many ways irreplaceable.
“There are few players in the world on his level. To replace him is almost impossible. They have to do everything they can to get him to sign a new deal. If he doesn’t sign one, £88million would be a great deal. Clubs allow players to leave on a free far too often.
“It really frustrates me when clubs don’t protect their assets. Knowing Spurs, I’m sure talks are already going on behind the scenes about Kane’s future. You do not leave something like that to the last minute.”
Kane was asked about interest from Bayern Munich and his Tottenham future before his side’s 0-0 draw away to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, and claimed he was only focused on playing for his current club.
“I’m focused on Tottenham Hotspur and trying to do my best for us,” Kane said. “For sure, Bayern are a top, top club, but all my concentration is on Tottenham and trying to win tomorrow night.”
Kane’s response will not have dissuaded Bayern Munich, as Nagelsmann predicted how the striker’s potential time in Germany would fare. “He is very strong, has a strong body and it’s possible that he would score a lot of goals in the Bundesliga, but it will be tough, I think, for Bayern Munich. We will see what will happen in the future,” Nagelsmann said in July.
