The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust have announced that they have requested a meeting with the club’s board amid big concerns over the team’s recent performances. Spurs got off to a superb start to the season by winning their first three Premier League games under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
But since then they have lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace and Chelsea, and put in a dismal performance in the North London Derby on Sunday as they were deservedly beaten 3-1 by bitter rivals Arsenal.
They lie down in 11th place in the table and have been criticised by pundits and fans alike for their defensive and ineffective tactics.
On Tuesday morning the THST released a strongly worded statement demanding an audience with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and the rest of the board to discuss the future.
It read: “Over the past few weeks we’ve been contacted by an increasing number of Trust members and the wider fan base who are extremely concerned about the current direction of THFC.
”Part of our role as a Trust is to ensure the Club’s Board are fully aware of supporter sentiment. So we have asked for a meeting with the Club’s Executive Board to discuss both the short and long-term strategic vision for the football club.
“The Club’s Board will be aware of the questions currently being asked by the Trust, by fans and by the media. This meeting, therefore, is an opportunity for the decision makers at THFC to explain their plans to supporters.
“This explanation should include plans for this season and beyond, an explanation of how success will be measured and how the Club’s DNA will be regained.
“We await their response, and will update on our website as soon as there is any news.”
On Monday, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher became the latest high-profile figure to stick the boot into Spurs as he cast doubts over whether Nuno is the right man to take them forward.
After slamming the amount of space available in midfield during the Arsenal game, he said: “It’s actually unbelievable. The manager must have told them where to go: this is before the first goal. It was always going to happen.
“I’ve seen this before one time at my own club with Roy Hodgson. He was a really good manager, and he is a really good manager, but he wasn’t the right manager for Liverpool.
“I think the Spurs supporters even early on now are thinking: ‘Is Nuno a Tottenham manager?’
“That was a bad one for Nuno. You’re never going to talk about managers after five or six games in a job.
“Nuno is a good manager, he proved that at Wolves. What I hope is he’s himself in the job. He’s seen as a pragmatic coach, a defensive coach.
“Be yourself. However long you stay in the job, at least be yourself. It was almost like that wasn’t his type of team. It doesn’t feel like a perfect fit, I must say that. It almost feels like Jose Mourinho lite.”
