Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon has responded to Manchester United legend Roy Keane’s fiery Sky Sports debate with Jamie Redknapp, insisting he found it funny how irate the latter got in his defence of the Spurs squad.

Before their 4-0 thrashing of Burnley last weekend, Keane and Redknapp were embroiled in a heated debate about Jose Mourinho’s players live on air.

Keane declared that the Spurs squad is full of “so many average players” outside of top scorers Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Redknapp, however, replied: “Reguilon is as good a left-back as there is in the country so I think you’ve got that wrong.”

Keane goaded his colleague by replying: “Is that why Real Madrid let him go? Why did Real Madrid let him go?”

To which Redknapp then reiterated: “Does that matter? Just because Real Madrid let him go that doesn’t make him a good player? He’s a fantastic left-back!”

Keane eventually admitted that the Spaniard, who cost Spurs around £25million in the summer, was a good player but the clip of the debate went viral thanks to Redknapp’s anger.

Reguilon himself reacted on Twitter, quote-tweeting the video and posting it alongside a GIF of Michael Jackson eating popcorn from his iconic Thriller music video.

And now the Spain international has properly broken his silence, hitting back at Keane’s assertion that Spurs only have a mediocre squad.

“This is Roy Keane’s opinion but we have a lot of top-class players who can play in every team,” he said.

“We have the best players but thank you, Jamie, for defending me.

“It was so funny – he was really angry. I watched that and smiled a lot, it was very nice.”

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho meanwhile responded earlier this week: “I have huge respect for Roy.

“I love to work with him when I was at Sky, but independent of that, a winner like he is, I have lots of respect for Roy, and for his job as a pundit.

“But I’m not going to make any comments.

“Of course Reggy comes from a culture of very technical football. He was born and made in a winning club, a club that is always playing to win.

“Where since you are a kid you are educated in that direction. He goes forward, he is quick, he is creative, he assists, he is enthusiastic.

“But first season in the Premier League is normally not easy for a certain kind of player. I am very happy with him.”

The 24-year-old defender, who won the Europa League with Sevilla last season, has produced five assists in 22 appearances for the north London outfit so far this term.

He was an unused substitute in the win over Fulham last time out but should return to the team to face Crystal Palace tonight (7.15pm).

Spurs can at least temporarily move two points off of fourth-placed Chelsea with victory with their Champions League prospects suddenly revived after back-to-back wins.
