Many of the Tottenham staff knew Nuno Espirito Santo would be the wrong appointment for the club, according to reports. Nuno is under severe pressure following Saturday’s 3-0 loss at home to Manchester United in the Premier League. Chairman Daniel Levy held emergency talks on Sunday to discuss the future of the manager.

Spurs won their first three league matches of the season.

However, they have won just two of the next seven and have scored just nine goals in 10 games.

Nuno’s style of play has not impressed the Tottenham fans, who roundly booed the manager and his players on several occasions at the weekend.

Talismanic striker Harry Kane has struggled to reach his normal heights in front of goal, netting just once so far in the league.

But the Mail claims many at Spurs are not surprised by the decline under Nuno.

They knew the former Wolves boss would not be the right fit for the club and it is a ‘mystery’ as to why he was appointed.

Nuno was far from the first choice for Levy, with the likes of Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Brendan Rodgers all ahead of him on the Spurs wishlist.

At the time of Nuno’s appointment, Levy said the Portuguese would bring back an attacking style of football.

But the Spurs chief has now acknowledged his error in appointing the 47-year-old.

The Mail says even if Nuno survives this week, it is only delaying the inevitable.

Former Chelsea boss Conte is once again linked with the job.

The Italian rejected the post in the summer and has recently been linked with replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United.

But United’s win over Tottenham has eased the pressure on the United manager.

Following the defeat, Nuno was asked his opinion on the fans’ negative reaction to the performance.

He said: “What can we say? It’s the reality. When our fans don’t see what they expect, what they want, they are going to show it to you, they are going to boo.

“We have to be strong and accept it, recognise that it’s not words that are going to take away the anger they are experiencing at this moment, only actions.

“We have to do much better in our actions on Thursday (Vitesse at home in the UEFA Europa Conference League) and the next one (Everton away in the Premier League next Sunday) so we can change this around.

“All the games are important, Thursday, the next one and after that, the next one. We have to stick together. It’s the only way. Let’s try to stick together.”
